This Week's Connection

Here is what we are learning this week:
Reader's & Writer's Workshop:
  • Completed weekly reading logs are due back each Monday and must be signed by the parent.
  • Literacy Focus: We will be completing the book Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne. This week we will have a blogging question and on Friday we will be watching the 1956 version of the movie.  We will be comparing and contrasting the book with the movie.
  • Writing: Students will be writing persuasive letters to Mrs. Hughes and creating persuasive ads about Earth Day.
  • Grammar: Daily Sentence editing pp. 42-43.  Quiz on Friday.
  • Final literature extension will be due on May 7th.
Social Studies:
  • Students will be analyzing the early battles of the Civil War, identifying the major battles, and describe the surrender of General Lee to General Grant.
  • Camp Disney Volunteer Meeting is April 25th at 3:30.  If you can't make it please let me know so I can get you the packet.  Thank you for helping.
Math:
  • Students will be competing fraction projects in class on Monday.
  • In conjunction with Earth Day activities, students will be working to solve a variety of word problems.
  • Review homework will be assigned Moday, Tuesday & Wednesday this week.
  • Students will begin a webquest about area and perimeter on Wednesday. After completing the webquest, they will be working on  "Dream House" projects during our class time.
Science/Health:
  • We are celebrating Earth Day today! (April 23). Students will be completing various activities as they learn about Earth Day. Don't forget we will be enjoing a picnic and students need to bring an "earth friendly" packed lunch! (Also, they should wear something blue or green.)
  • We will begin our Health Unit later in the week which will focus on healthy lifestyles.
Spelling:  
  • Students will be assigned practice assignments for List #20. Rather than a test, students will be working with groups to create skits/commercials using words from lists 19 & 20.
Other Items of Interest:
    • Students continue EDMIN testing in the computer lab this week.
    • Spring Pictures on Wednesday.
    • All fifth grade students visit Cherokee on Thursday from 9 to10:30.
    • In School Players assembly Thursday afternoon.
    • Camp Disney Volunteer meeting April 25 at 3:30.
