This Week's Connection

What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the human soul.
~Joseph Addison

Here is what we are learning this week:
Reader's & Writer's Workshop:
  • February Literature Extension will be due on February 29.
  • Completed weekly reading logs are due back each Monday and must be signed by the parent.
  • By Thursday everyone should have their speeches completed and then a copy of the speech will be coming home for the student to start memorizing.  Once a speech is approved then no changes can be made.  Students already know this requirement. Click on this site as a reminder of this assignment: Night at the Museum
  • In writing we will be working on vocabulary and daily editing skills using a variety of activities on the smart board and games.
  • Literary Focus this week: Main Idea
Social Studies:
  • We will be finishing up our government unit and moving on out west.
  • Students will be creating a historical background for their famous American on their trifold boards.

  • We have finished our Division Unit. Study guides were sent home on Thursday and we had a class review on Friday. The Unit test is today.
  • The rest of this week we will be focusing on the order of operations. Practice problems will be assigned for homework each evening.
Science/Health:
  • I learned late last week that Kevin Lighty, meteorologist from KOLR TV 10, will be giving a weather presentation to the Disney 5th graders this Tuesday! He does a wonderful job! Due to his presentation, we are taking a week off from our Vertebrate Unit and will spend the week focusing on weather!
Spelling:
  • We are on List 14 this week. Spelling practice - Students must complete their two choices by Friday. The test will be on Friday.
