This Week's Connection

Here is what we are learning this week:

Reader's & Writer's Workshop:

• Students will work with their groups to brainstorm on a new idea for a book by the author they are studying and create a Power Point presentation.  Work is done in class and is due on Friday. 
•  No literature extension for the month of January.
• Completed weekly reading logs are due back each Monday and must be signed by the parent.
• In writing we will be working on vocabulary and daily editing skills using a variety of activities on the smart board and games. Focus this week is prefixes.

Social Studies:

• Students will begin their unit on government.  They will partner up to complete an assignment in class.
• We will begin researching famous Americans for our Disney's Night at the Museum.  A letter is going home today.

Math: 

• We have begun our unit on Division. Homework will be assigned nightly to review the concepts covered in class. 

Science/Health:

• We are beginning our Vertebrate Unit. This week will identify the five classes of vertebrates. 
• Our first focus will be birds due to our Eagle Days field trip this week.
• Please note: Mrs. Baker's classroom will have a donation box for used eyeglasses! Please allow your student to bring any used eyeglasses that you no longer need. These donations will be given to Lions Club International to assist people around the world with visual impairments.

Spelling:

•  Due to the shortend school week this week, I will not assign a new spelling list until next week. The new parent letter/master list will be sent home on Friday, January 20th and new choices will be posted. 

Other Items of Interest:

• Edmins Performance Series Testing will continue this week. Please encourage you student to take their time and do their very best!
• Penny Wars starts TODAY!  A note went home last week explaining everything.
• A field trip for Eagle Days is scheduled for all 5th graders at Disney this Friday, January 20th. Please be sure to return the permissions slips that were sent home last week.
