This Weeks Connection

Here is what we will be looking forward to this week:

Reader's & Writer's Workshop:
  • Literacy Focus: Sequencing
  • Hughes ~ Island of the Blue Dolphin Chapters 19-24
  • Baker ~ Number the Stars Chapters 11-14
  • Completed weekly reading logs are due back each Monday and must be signed by the parent.
  • Grammar: Common and Proper Nouns, Gender nouns
  • Writer's Workshop: Review steps of the writing process.  
Social Studies:
  • Students will be learning about three major settlements: Jamestown, Roanoke, and Plymouth.
  • Quiz over the three settlements on Thursday.
Math:
  • Finishing our unit on place value, estimation, computational procedures for addition, subtraction and multiplication of whole numbers and decimals. NO Study Links this week, but a worksheet will be assigned as homework on Monday and Tuesday.
  • Unit Test will be Monday, Oct. 24.Study Guide will be sent home Wednesday. It must be completed and signed by a parent/guardian by Friday, Oct. 21. We will review/correct the study guide in class on Friday.
  • Please continue to work with your student to improve speed and accuracy of multiplication facts. Ask them about their progress in becoming a five-star general!Practice at home will help increase the success of the student. :)
Science:
  • Projects for investigation of matter are due this Wednesday, OCT. 19.
  • We are switching gears and starting our Life Science Unit. This week students will be learning about classification and how to use a dichotomous key. 
  • Leaf Project requirements will be sent home on Wednesday. Students will have the opportunity to gather many of their leaves during our field trip to Close Memorial Park on Friday, but may need to gather additional leaves at home. The Leaf Project will be due on Wednesday, November 2.
Spelling:

  • Monday: Write words and choose three choices from the spelling choice board.
  • Tuesday - Thursday:  complete choices from the spelling choice board. (This is homework and is due Friday.)
  • Friday: Assignments from spelling choice board are due. Spelling Test is given.
Other Items of Interest:
  • Field Trip: Close Memorial Park on Friday from 10-12.
  • PTA has extended the Fund Drive through this week. Please consider making a donation to help meet the goal. (Many of our field trips this year will be paid for by PTA!)
