This Week's Connection

A simple compliment may not alter a student's behavior immediately but it does help get things moving in the right direction. ~ A.P. Witham  Here is our direction for the week ahead:

Reader's & Writer's Workshop:

• Starting a class book read: Hughes ~ Island of the Blue Dolphin & Baker ~ Number the Stars
• Completed weekly reading logs are due back each Monday and must be signed by the parent.
• Grammar: Simple Subjects and Simple Predicates
• Writer's Workshop: Editing skills with capitalization.
• Reading Pillows ~ Each child will need 1/2 yard of cotton material (no flannel, no fleece, and nothing that stretches) and a 16 to 20 oz bag of batting. The due date for this is now Monday, September 26th.

Social Studies:

• Reviewing regions of the United States.
• Skyping with special guest reporter from Hawaii.  My niece, whose family is stationed in Hawaii, will be skyping with us on Monday to share geographical information from this wonderful state.

Math:

• Begin Unit 2. (Please note that I will be skipping some lessons and will not be following the exact order of the book for the Lessons and Study Links.) This week we will cover lessons 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4 focusing on place value, methods for addition and subtraction, and story problems for addition and substraction.
• Homework for Monday - Wednesday will be Study Links for Lessons 2.2, 2.3, 2.4. A math worksheet will be assigned for Thursday.
• Friday - Quiz (10 pts.) covering Lessons 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4.
• Please continute to work with your student to improve speed and accuracy of multiplication facts. Practice at home will help increase the success of the student. :)

Science:

• Begin Chapter 1 in Physical Science. Our big question is, "How can you describe matter, mixtures, and solutions?" In order to answer this question, students will be investigating and exploring through many hands-on activities, reading the text book and related information, taking notes, and watching videos.
• Test for Chapter 1 is tentatively scheduled for next week on Thursday (Oct. 6).

Spelling:

• Monday: Write words and choose three choices from the spelling choice board.
• Tuesday - Thursday: Students practice spelling words by completing their choices from the spelling choice board. (This is homework and must be completed by Friday.)
• Friday: Assignments from spelling choice board are due. Spelling Test is given.
