Literature Extension Projects

Literature Extensions will be due one to two times a quarter. Due date for the first literature extension is October 1, 2012.  We will spend time silent reading in class, but you will be responsible for reading your book at home, if necessary.  Here is a list of guidelines for all book extension activities:
  1. Book choices must be approved by the teacher and at least 60 pages long.
  2. All activities must be completed by the student and ready to present on the due date.  Any late reports will be given 50% off on the following day and no credit any time after that.  Assignments not turned in will receive a zero.
  3. See below for a list of projects that you may choose from.  New choices will be given each month.  You may not do the same project twice.
Projects: Choose only one project to complete.

Book Cover
Design a new book cover for the book you have chosen to read.   The title of the book and the authors name must be on the cover as well as your name for the illustrator. Be creative but do not use a computer to create your book cover.   On a separate piece of paper write or type a paragraph of why you chose to redesign the book cover and a paragraph summarizing the book. Include the characters, theme, and setting.  Use an 8 x 11 ½ sheet of paper.
In the News!
Create the front page of a newspaper that tells about events and characters in the book. The newspaper must include: the name of the newspaper (title of the book), article summarizing the book in a "newsworthy" manner, and pictures with captions. Other features that may be included: weather reports, an editorial or editorial cartoon, ads, etc. Make sure to discuss the characters, setting, theme, and your reaction to the book. Everything needs to relate to the book you have read.  Be creative but do not use a computer to create your newsletter. Use an 8 x 11 ½ sheet of paper.
Letter to the Main Character
Write a friendly letter to the main character of you book.
·         In the first paragraph, introduce yourself, mention the book’s title and compliment the character on his/her role in the book (4-6 sentences).
·         In the second paragraph, state things you noticed like how you felt in specific scenes and ask questions (6-8 sentences).
·          In the third paragraph: Thank the character for their role and being in the book. Make a recommendation of the type of role you would like to see them in next. Write in complete sentences.
·         Be sure to proofread for spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Use the proper format for a friendly letter and don’t forget to sign your name.

Timeline
Design a timeline for 8 to 10 main events in the story.
·         Choose eight to ten significant scenes from your book. Make a timeline that reveals the sequence of your book’s storyline. Include the chapter and page number where each event takes place in the book and a written description telling what is happening in the scene and why this scene is important. Timelines must be in order of the events that happened in your book.
·         Be sure to make a cover page that includes the title of the book, authors’ name, and your name.
